Kampot Salt Fields

Learn more

Just a short ride from Kampot’s town center, the salt fields around Chum Kriel are one of the region’s most striking sights.

Vast flat pans reflect the sky, neat salt mounds rise in the distance, and farmers work under the tropical sun. During the dry season, the white crystals sparkle against the earth, creating some of the best photo opportunities at dawn and dusk.

Salt is still made here by hand: seawater is guided into shallow basins, left to evaporate in the heat, then raked, piled, and dried using simple baskets and tools. This centuries-old process is carried on by local families who are part of the Kampot-Kep salt association. For visitors, the fields are more than just a beautiful backdrop. They are a living tradition and an authentic glimpse into rural life in southern Cambodia.

With its cool climate and sweeping views across the Gulf of Thailand. The road to the summit winds through the forest, past waterfalls and wildlife, before reaching the plateau more than 1,000 meters above Kampot.

At the top, you can explore the remains of the French colonial hill station, including the old church and the shell of the grand Bokor Palace Hotel and Casino. Few places near Kampot offer such a perfect mix of hike and swim.

The trail to Veal Pouch Waterfall is an easy walk through the forest, ending at pools of cool water fed by the first cascade. It’s a popular place to relax, enjoy the shade, and cool down in the afternoon heat.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can continue further up to more remote tiers of the falls. A guide is recommended for these sections, as the trails are harder to follow. The falls are at their best in November and December, when the rainy season leaves them full and flowing.

Local Cave Temples

Learn more

Limestone hills around Kampot hide caves filled with history and legend.

For centuries, locals have used these natural caverns as places of worship, carving shrines and temples into the stone. The most famous is Phnom Chhnork, where a 7th-century Hindu temple dedicated to Shiva still stands inside the cave, built from ancient brick during the Funan era.

Exploring the caves is a mix of nature and culture. Stalactites and rock formations frame the entrances, while narrow passages open onto hidden shrines and viewpoints over the surrounding rice fields. Visiting these caves offers a glimpse into Cambodia’s ancient past, and shows how spiritual life has long been tied to Kampot’s dramatic limestone landscape.

Kampong Trach

Learn more

Few places in southern Cambodia combine scenery and history like Kampong Trach.

Just outside Kampot is small town of Kampong Trach, its dramatic karst cliffs rise over rice paddies, pepper farms, and small villages. The caves in the limestone hills contain shrines and statues, but they also recall a darker past, when villagers hid inside during American bombings and the area remained under Khmer Rouge control until 1995.

Now the region is opening up again. The dramatic cliffs, reflective lakes, and wide rice fields are every bit as beautiful as they once were, and the villages at their base offer a glimpse of rural life. Still largely overlooked, Kampong Trach is being rediscovered by travelers.
